An addict or alcoholic or a person who suffers from both addiction and psychological/psychiatric problems together , such as mood disorders ( eg. Bi Polar ) is known as dually diagnosed or is suffering from a co occurring or multi occurring disorder.
The family of such individuals are affected in every aspect of their life. The addict or dual diagnosed family member will withdraw from their interaction with the family, will exhibit bizarre and unpredictable behavior, will disappear for days at a time, will devastate the family financially, will incur debt ,may exhibit violent tendencies, may be unfaithful and practice unsafe sexual behavior, will steal from outsiders and family members, will lie incessantly, will subject the family to humiliation and ridicule ,will fail to keep promises and commitments, may ruin the families credit, will fail to pay bills , will lose jobs, may become verbally , physically and mentally abusive to adults and children in the family, will start arguments as a reason for their continued drinking and drug use, will commit crimes, will risk arrests for DUIs, may incur large expenses for legal assistance , will ignore their physical and dental health, may overdose and come close to death , may in fact die , may be incarcerated, may be admitted to psychiatric institutions, and many many other ways. It is truly said that that in most ways the family suffers more than the active addict because the family does not have the luxury to escape reality the way the addict does.
